Why the brain uses creatine

Creatine and phosphocreatine participate in rapid cellular energy buffering. That biological role is well established. The harder question is whether oral supplementation produces a meaningful cognitive improvement in everyday life.

What human trials suggest

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis focused on memory in healthy people reported an overall benefit, with a larger observed effect among older participants. More recent reviews have found positive signals in selected outcomes while rating parts of the evidence base as uncertain or heterogeneous. That is a reason for measured interest, not a reason to promise a universal effect.

Who might respond differently?

Baseline diet, age, sleep deprivation, creatine status and study task may all matter. Some studies have specifically examined vegetarians or cognitively stressful conditions. Those subgroup findings should not be generalized beyond the people and conditions actually studied.
